The quality and the result of haircut directly depends not only on quality of barber’s scissors, but also on their accordance to hair type, hair texture and purpose of haircut. An especially creative and complex haircut may require several various types of shears, but even the simplest and the most basic haircut demands tool which can provide an accurate and clean cut. In one word, usage of inappropriate and poor quality hair shears usually results in defective haircut, because dull blades or other lacks greatly impact the quality of haircut or even damage the hair, causing split ends. It is worth investing money in the purchase of more expensive and appropriate shears than lose clients because of imperfect haircut.

Often we see such hair scissors as cutting, thinning, texturising, styling and even left-handed shears. It is clear, that there are a lot of various shears, but which are which and what are their functions? Lets find out!

We can easily understand the difference between all of these scissors just by one glance, because they differ from each other with appearance. Each of them is designed to perform specific task – some are perfect for basic haircuts, but other are used to add special effects of haircut. Hairdressers choose the right shears, basing on several criteria, for example, the style in which they are specialized in and the way they usually hold the scissors. It is needless to say, that the price of hair cutting scissors can be from democratically low to surprisingly high.

It should be mentioned, that professional barbers usually have all types of hair cutting shears, but you can get along with the basic set of hairdressers scissors as well.

Most of haircuts are performed by regular shears, also known as hair cutting shears. These shears are universal, because they can be used both in salons and in households. These scissors have handle with holes for thumb and index finger, and two blades which meet during cutting. Styles and designs of hair cutting shears vary, but usually they have simple and traditional design. Often they have rubber finger inserts for size adjustment and finger rest for comfort. Most of them are 4.5 to 6.5 inches long.


Another type of hairstylists shears are thinning scissors which sometimes are called as texturizing or chunking shears, but they are not the same, because texturizing shears are mainly meant for hair styling, not for hair thinning. The base of thinning scissors is similar to regular hair cutting shears – they have loops for index finger and thumb. However, their blades varies greatly – the top blade contains teeth which remove only some hair with each cut, thinning them without changing the haircut. It should be mentioned, that hair thinning scissors are used only for those hair sections which tend to get thick compared to the rest of the head, for example, the back of the head.
